Topps, a manufacturer of chewing gum, entered into the bubble gum market specifically in the late 1940s. To compete with Fleer at the time, Topps wanted to include comics with their gum as well. To start, a few agreements were made for short-lived comics from outside sources. Eventually, Topps created their own character, Bazooka the Atom Bubble Boy, in house. While short-lived and not comparable to the character we know today, this marked the beginning for BAZOOKA® Joe. Finally, between 1952 and 1954, Topps reached a licensing agreement with cartoonist Wesley Morse, who went on to create Bazooka Joe and his Gang.
